Plumbing Noises to Listen For

Plumbing Noises to Listen For

When you’ve lived in a home long enough, you get used to the sounds that it makes. The creaks, the bangs, the screeches, have all become part of your daily life. Because you are so accustomed to these sounds, the natural reaction is to ignore them.

But ignoring some noises can lead to a lot of problems, especially if these sounds are made by your plumbing. To show you what we mean, here are some of the more common plumbing sounds that you may hear in your home and what each one can mean:

  • Gurgling – When you hear gurgling in your drains, this means that bubbles are forming inside them. This is usually caused by blockages or clogs that need to be removed from your drains. This is also caused by a problem with your drain vents. To resolve this, you need to either remove the clog or have your drain vents fixed.
  • Shaking – When you hear your pipes shaking through the walls, it is likely that they have come loose from their mounting straps. This can mean that the mounting straps holding your pipes have either come loose or have deteriorated to a point where they can no longer hold your pipes securely. You will need to either tighten the bolts that hold these straps in place or replace them with new ones.
  • Banging – The banging sound that pipes make can indicate that a valve suddenly closed in your water system. This banging noise is called a water hammer and can cause damage to your pipes if it happens often enough.
  • Screeching – You usually hear this noise when you open or close a faucet. This is caused by some faulty part in your faucet or a loose part that needs to be tightened. The easiest solution to this problem is not to find where the screech is coming from or what is causing it, but to simply replace the faucet with a new one.
  • Hissing – This can indicate that the water pressure in your pipes is too much for them to handle. The remedy is installing a valve that reduces the pressure running through your pipes. This valve will help you reduce water pressure in your home as you turn your water on.

These plumbing noises should never be ignored and should be addressed as soon as possible to avoid more serious issues in the future.
